Youth and women workers from the maritime industry throughout New Zealand attended the inaugural Maritime Women and Youth Seminar in Wellington on 8 July 2016.
Delegates attended from Auckland, Tauranga, Napier, New Plymouth, Wellington, Lyttelton, Timaru, Port Chalmers Dunedin and Bluff. A delegation on maritime women and maritime youth also attended from the Maritime Union of Australia.
Speakers included Deputy National Secretary of the MUA Will Tracey, Leader of the Labour Party Andrew Little, Labour MP for Wellington Central Grant Robertson and Green MP Gareth Hughes.
Delegates attending discussed issues of relevance for them in the maritime industry including health and safety and workplace harassment, and established the basis of a national women and national youth structure.
